THE CPA Approach

SERIOUSLY ADDICTIVE MATHEMATICS

The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach is designed to develop a firm grasp and understanding of mathematical concepts. The approach was developed by Jerome Bruner, an American psychologist, as the foundation of teaching the Singapore way as broken down below:

Concrete

Physically illustrating mathematical concepts using objects, manipulatives and games to model problems (laying a foundation for conceptual understanding).

Pictorial

Concepts are explained using diagrams or pictures representing the problem (supports conceptual understanding).

Abstract

Problems are represented by mathematical numbers and symbols (which by this stage will be conceptually understood)

Customised programme

At SAM, we understand that each child is unique. The ability to learn and the best method used to learn, differs from child to child, therefore we customise our program to suit your child’s specific needs.

Before commencing with us, your child will be given an Assessment Test to determine his/her level of Mathematical comprehension. The results of this test will see your child being placed at a suitable level for them to learn freely and confidently.

As learning progresses, new concepts will be introduced on an individual basis which will allow your child to learn at their own pace. As the journey continues with your child, we foster a student-tutor relationship that enables us to identify your child’s unique strengths and weaknesses, allowing us to create a process and pace that works for them.

At S.A.M. we believe in creating and maintaining a relationship with you the parent as well, giving you updates on your child’s progress.
